सूरदास के पद गाँव-गाँव में गाए जाते हैं। वह हिन्दी के यशस्वी भक्त कवि थे। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की बाल-लीला का जैसा भावपूर्ण चित्रण सूरदास ने किया है, वैसा विश्व साहित्य में अन्यत्र दुर्लभ है। ब्रजभाषा की पूरी मिठास सूर के पदों में भर गई है। विद्वानों का मत है कि सूरदास का जन्म दिल्ली के निकट बल्लभगढ़ से लगभग दो मील दूर स्थित सीही में हुआ था। वह जाति के ब्राह्मण थे। किशोरावस्था में ही विरक्त होकर वह मथुरा चले गए और बाद में आगरा-मथुरा के बीच गऊघाट पर साधु के रूप में रहने लगे। उन्होंने अपना एक पद बनाकर स्वामी बल्लभाचार्य को सुनाया। इससे वह सूरदास से बहुत प्रभावित हुए। उन्होंने सूरदास को अपना शिष्य बना लिया। उन्हीं की आज्ञा से सूरदास ने संस्कृत के श्रीमद्भागवत महापुराण के आधार पर श्रीकृष्ण का विस्तारपूर्वक पद्य शैली में वर्णन किया। सूरदास के सम्बन्ध में प्रसिद्ध है वह जन्मांध थे। लेकिन उनके काव्य के वर्ण्य विषय से स्पष्ट है कि ऐसी बात नहीं होगी। उन्होंने अपनी कविता में विविध रंगों, बालकों की स्वाभाविक चेष्टाओं तथा प्राकृतिक दृश्यों का जैसा सजीव और यथार्थ वर्णन किया है, वैसा वर्णन वस्तुओं को भली- भाँति देखे बिना सम्भव ही नहीं है।
